Jeni's Spent Five Years Trying to Make Ice Cream Out of Acorns, and It Is Finally Here

October 2, 2026 • Moe Train Eats

Jeni's just released Appalachian Acorn Pie, an acorn ice cream with a graham cracker swirl, and the backstory is absolutely wild. This took five years of foraging, milling, and testing to pull off. Five years. For ice cream. Made from tree nuts that fall on your lawn.

Here is the thing: nobody was selling the acorns they needed, so Jeni's basically had to build an entire supply chain from scratch. They partnered with an agricultural cooperative in Carroll County, Ohio, signed grant letters to help the co-op expand, and then the acorns went to an Amish farm to be milled into flour. Communication with the Amish farm required snail mail, a community phone, and in-person visits. Somewhere in Ohio, there is a person reading handwritten letters about acorn logistics, and honestly, I respect the entire operation.

The acorns had to be washed and leached to remove the tannins, which would otherwise make the whole thing taste like a punishment. The result is described as nutty and sweet, somewhere in the neighborhood of hazelnut, coconut, and chestnut. It launched October 1 in scoop shops and online, in very limited supply. This is the kind of flavor that sounds insane on paper and somehow makes perfect sense when you realize Jeni's never misses.
